HUNGER STRIKE DAY 7 (8/3): HEALTHCARE WORKERS FOR NO MORE 24
Today marked day 7 of the home care workers’ hunger strike. Healthcare workers and students came out to support the strike and called out how Julie Menin’s refusal to act dehumanizes and degrades care work for all workers. 

Shame on Menin for continuing the torture of 24-hr workdays and destroying the health & lives of our caregivers!

1. Tomorrow’s (Aug 4) program begins at 12pm at City Hall and home care workers will make a very important announcement. 

2. October 3rd: Home care workers announced that they will begin mobilization for a big protest on October 3rd. More to come!

Anne Kochman, retired nurse“It infuriates us, how Julie Menin devalues the work of caregivers. She calls 24-hour work days an ‘outdated practice’ as though it were something that had value at one point, ignoring its brutal impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of the home care workers.. She pays lip service to its ‘extreme physical and emotional strain’ but her refusal to allow Intro 303 to be voted upon indicates that her true interests lie elsewhere, in pandering to and placating so-called labor unions and enriching insurance companies. Menin’s actions reveal that she does not give a damn about our health nor the health of those we care for.”
Chloe, nursing student“It is not lost on me that patients’ quality of life improves when they receive good care, and good care depends on caregivers having safe and humane working conditions. The callous disregard for home care workers’ mental and physical health, as well as their lives outside of work with their families, is deeply dehumanizing.”
Rubi, nursing student“Even without the severity of the work that is done in mind, people deserve to have a life that isn’t just work, and deserve to get paid proper wages for all of the hours they work. When healthcare workers are paid properly and taken care of, their quality of work becomes better so they can take care of your mother, your grandmothers, your fathers, your uncles, and you never know when it may be you who needs help.”
Max Doyle, pre-medical student”The devaluation of home care work poses a threat to all workers, because it relegitimizes the practices that workers have fought against again and again throughout history. In the US, there are no blanket laws against 24 hour workdays for anyone. Legally banning the 24 hour workday for home care workers sets a precedent for all workers, and increases the collective power of labor across all disciplines. Currently one person holds the power to end the 24 hour workday. Shame on Julie Menin for refusing to end it! Shame on her for letting ALL workers down!”
