HUNGER STRIKE DAY 3 RECAP – LABOR LEADERS FOR NO MORE 24: July 30, 2026

HUNGER STRIKE DAY 3 (7/30): Labor Leaders Demand Speaker Menin Submit Int. 303 Now!
Today, labor leaders, union members, retiree organizations, workers’ centers, and labor coalition activists converged on the steps of City Hall to call for the abolition of the 24-hour workday, demanding that Speaker Julie Menin keep her promise and allow a vote on New York City Council original Intro 303, the No More 24 Act.
Home care workers continue to endure conditions that no other sector of the labor movement would tolerate. Yet, Speaker Menin has proposed that the protections of the No More 24 Act be denied to any worker who is unionized.
Tomorrow’s (Jul 31) program begins at 12pm and will be a Disability Justice for NoMore24 press conference. Formed by disabled people and allies who demand an end to the 24 hr workday, the Disability Justice for NoMore24 will call out Speaker Menin for torturing workers and endangering disabled people:
Saturday (Aug 2) at noon communities will organize music to support hunger strikers at City Hall.
Sunday’s (Aug 2) large rally at noon will be centered on working women protesting Speaker Menin for both continuing the sexist and racist 24-hr workdays and unabashedly spitting on care work and caregivers:
Hope to see you there!
Call Speaker Menin today and everyday and tell her to pass the No More 24!

Today’s Highlights
Charles Barron, former member of NYC City Council & NYS Assembly“Working 24 hours, that can give you a stroke, can create chronic exhaustion and separation anxiety with your family. How can City Council care more about horses than human beings?”
Christopher Marte, Council Member of District 1“What we have here is the worst working conditions we have seen in New York CIty in a long time. The United Nations has sent a letter to our leaders to say what is happening in NYC is slave-like labor, and a crime against women and children. They also mention the way to end it is by passing intro 303, the No More 24 Act?”
Craig Moore, Coalition of Black Trade Unionists“Health care workers should not be working 24 hours. We are supposed to be a progressive city. The 24-hour workday is exploitation. Yet, you have labor leaders signing contracts that allow workers to work 24 hours and only getting paid for 13 hours. They are putting the patients and workers at risk. I’m here today to support Intro 303 as a health care worker.”
Cristina Rodriguez-Hart, a DC37 member”I spoke to members of the DC37 local that does home care work, local 389, and they said they don’t want to work 24-hour shifts.”
Emith Escobar, Brandworkers“Working 24 hours should be illegal. It does not benefit the patient or the workers. It benefits the bosses who are trying to line their pockets with more of our money. We need to end the 24-hour workday.”
Gibb Surette, Legal Services Staff Association NOLSW UAW 2320“Julie Menin, in this union town, has already proposed that the protection of No More 24, if it is ever extended to anyone, should still be denied to any worker who is unionized. So, for the home healthcare workers and for all of us: When workers are under attack, what do we do? Stand up, fight back”
Gloria Brandman, Secretary of the Retired Teachers Chapter of the United Federation of Teachers“Speaker Menin, Intro 303 must be put to the Council as is, without any changes. Like your attempts to allow agencies to force workers to consent to torture, and to allow unions to force their workers into 24-hour shifts, that would just continue coercing home healthcare workers to work slave hours.”
Lai Yee Chan, retired home care worker of Chinese-American Planning Council and a member of 1199SEIU“This is not only discrimination against union workers—it is the torture of women! The whole world is watching you, a female council speaker committing violence against women!”
Michelle Keller, DC37 member and NYC Organization of Public Service Retirees“Speaker Menin – Where are you? In March – 5 months ago, you came face to face with the Home Care Workers and promised a timely resolution on Intro 303. Now Speaker Menin, these women are asking to do it, and you better do it! No more 24!”
Mimi Rosenberg, Legal Aid Society ALAA–UAW Local 2325″No human being was created to carry 24 hours. Only home care workers are told to stay awake for 24 endless hours. And when they finally say, ‘I can’t do this anymore’. The answer is ‘Wait’. ‘Wait’ says Legal Aid Society. But history has taught that justice never arrived because those who suffered waited.”
Mireya Silva, home care worker of the United Jewish Council and a member of 1199SEIU“Speaker Menin is responsible for the torture of us immigrant women of color. We are not going to stop until Menin puts an end to the 24-hr workday.”
